Kanu, who is the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, is answering to a seven-count treasonable felony charge the Federal Government entered against him.
He had accused the previous judge handling the matter, Justice Binta Nyako, of bias, insisting she should not continue his trial having earlier recused herself.
Kanu, who was first arrested in Lagos on October 14, 2015, upon his return to Nigeria from the United Kingdom, has been in detention since 2021 when his bail was revoked after he was re-arrested in Kenya and extraordinarily renditioned back to the country.
With the reassignment of the case to a new judge, Kanu’s trial will commence de-novo (afresh).
