It is imperative to respond to the recent media chat held by Governor Alex Otti on October 16, 2025, where he made statements that are deeply troubling and unbecoming of a state leader.
First, Governor Otti’s remarks suggesting that “anyone planning to write election results should first write their will” are completely unacceptable. Such statements can easily be interpreted as threats to citizens and political actors. Leadership in a democratic society requires engagement, transparency, and respect, not intimidation.
Secondly, the governor’s repeated disrespect toward Rt. Hon. Ben Kalu, the number six man in Nigeria, for simply asking for accountability, is alarming. Rt. Hon. Ben Kalu’s calls for transparency are legitimate and entirely within his rights as a public official and citizen. No elected leader should insult or belittle individuals exercising their constitutional duties to demand accountability.
Additionally, Governor Otti’s public misrepresentation of allocations and his attempt to dismiss legitimate concerns as “fear” or “political posturing” undermine public confidence in governance. Citizens and officials alike deserve clear, factual explanations on how public funds are spent and how policies are implemented. Name calling or mischaracterizing inquiries does nothing to improve governance.
We call on Governor Otti to:
1. Retract any threatening statements made during the media chat and issue a public apology where appropriate.
2. Respect Rt. Hon. Ben Kalu and all citizens are seeking accountability without resorting to insults or dismissive remarks.
3. Provide transparent, factual explanations on all matters raised, including federal allocations and governance issues.
4. Focus on delivering results and constructive engagement with the people of Abia State rather than attacking critics.
Leadership is proven by transparency, accountability, and respect for citizens — not by threats or personal attacks. The people of Abia State deserve governance that prioritizes their welfare, upholds the rule of law, and embraces scrutiny as a means of strengthening democracy.
Governor Otti must recognize that his office demands humility, decorum, and constructive dialogue and that disrespecting citizens and elected officials is wholly unacceptable.
