
The Executive Chairman of Bende Local Government Area, Hon. Deacon Uwabunkonye Bassey, on Wednesday played host to traditional rulers from the local government during a capacity building workshop held at the Bende Council Headquarters. The event was part of a state-wide initiative tagged “Revitalising Traditional Leadership for a New Abia”, organized by the Abia State Government through the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs in collaboration with PHRIAMS Group of Consultants.
The workshop, which has been making rounds across the 17 Local Government Areas of Abia State, aims to strengthen the role of traditional rulers by equipping them with 21st-century leadership skills, modern governance practices, and innovative approaches to community development. And yesterday was Bende LGA edition.
In his remarks, Mayor Bassey expressed deep appreciation to His Excellency, Governor Alex Otti, for initiating such a timely and strategic program. He noted that the revitalization of traditional leadership is crucial to sustaining peace, unity, and grassroots development in the state. According to the mayor, empowering the custodians of culture and tradition with relevant knowledge is a step in the right direction for effective community leadership.
Mayor Bassey further charged the council of traditional rulers, Bende chapter, to make the most of the training by participating actively and applying the insights gained to their local domains. He emphasized the importance of adapting to the evolving challenges of modern governance while remaining rooted in cultural values and communal responsibilities.
The event featured expert-led sessions tailored to address leadership in the digital age, conflict resolution, and effective collaboration with local government structures. Traditional rulers in attendance under the leadership of Eze Uchendu Okorie, commended the state government for recognizing their role and investing in their capacity development.
