The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially received a petition seeking the recall of the Senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District, Mrs. Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
The petition, submitted earlier today, was presented on behalf of registered voters from the senatorial district by a delegation led by the Chairperson of the Kogi Women Development Association, Omole Charity Ijese.
The delegation was received by the Honorable Secretary to the Commission, Mrs. Rose Oriaran Anthony, alongside other senior INEC officials at the commission’s headquarters.
The petitioners are invoking their constitutional right to recall an elected representative, a process outlined in Section 69 of the Nigerian Constitution, which allows constituents to seek the removal of a sitting lawmaker through a petition signed by at least half of the registered voters in the affected district. The submission of the petition marks the first formal step in what could be a rigorous recall process, which includes verification of signatures, a referendum, and further procedural actions by INEC.
As of press time, neither Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan nor her representatives have publicly responded to the recall petition. However, political analysts suggest that the move could ignite significant political tensions within Kogi West and the broader Kogi State political landscape.
INEC is expected to review the petition and commence the required processes in line with the electoral guidelines. The commission has yet to release an official statement regarding the next steps.
This development comes amid growing political activity in Kogi State following the recent gubernatorial election and ongoing debates about legislative performance and representation.
